Meeting with the Mayor in Horta

On Tuesday 20 September, over 200 people came to the Matas i Ramis Civic Centre to meet the mayor Ada Colau and let her know the neighbourhood’s needs. This is the second time the mayor has gone in person to the Horta neighbourhood to listen and respond to local residents.
Once again, mobility was one of the key issues brought up by residents. The bus routes, the direction of traffic on the roads since the introduction of the Horta Superblock, the bicycle lanes, the demand for more Green Area parking places and the request for a bicycle lane on Passeig de Maragall were some of the aspects highlighted by people attending the meeting. They also raised the issue of pedestrians sharing space with bicycles and personal mobility vehicles.
Other issues raised were lack of safety, public highway maintenance, the location and number of recycling containers, the Horta Municipal Sports Centre open air swimming pool, the launch of the Carer’s Card, wild boars coming into the neighbourhood and the noise and nuisance caused at night by some of the bars on Carrer Tajo that do not respect the official opening hours. They also brought up the issues of dogs and children sharing space in parks and the psychological support service Konsulta’m, and they called for more loading and unloading zones.
The meeting was attended by local residents of all ages, many of whom were accompanied by their children. The mayor thanked them all for attending and taking part in the neighbourhood, ending the meeting by responding to all the concerns that had been raised.
This was the sixth meeting held by the mayor in the Horta-Guinardó district. The first one was held in the Carmel neighbourhood in April 2016; in February 2017, a joint meeting was held for the local residents of Sant Genís dels Agudells and Montbau; in January 2018, there was another meeting in Teixonera; and in February that same year, one in Guinardó. The last one until now was the meeting held in January 2020, also in Horta.

Mayor's office in the districts
The “Mayor’s Office in the Districts” is an initiative that takes the Government Commission, one of the city’s main decision-making bodies, to all the city’s districts. It was created to give neighbourhoods access to not just institutional but also everyday activities and find out at first hand the reality of each of the city’s 73 neighbourhoods. It therefore responds to the calls made by residents during the activity of the mayor’s office in neighbourhoods: providing channels to give residents access to the institutional activities being carried out by the Mayor’s Office.

Children have plenty to say
Children are citizens in their own right and must be taken into account. Children’s rights are a priority for the Mayor of Barcelona. Because of this, during the Covid-19 health emergency the Mayor made the case for children’s rights and denounced the adult-centred perspective employed to manage the pandemic. Here are some of the projects we are implementing from a perspective which includes our youngest citizens.
