The Mayor will have turned down more than 375,000 euros of her legally entitled salary during her two terms of office, from 2015 to 2023.

The official salary assigned to her office is €100,000 a year. Were she to accept her entire salary and the subsistence allowances assigned to her, the Mayor would receive €7,000 a month. Instead, she receives a net salary of €3,191 a month, waives her subsistence allowances and gives the rest of her salary to social projects.

When Barcelona en Comú entered the municipal government in 2015, it believed that councillor salaries were too high and suggested lowering them all. The goal was to maintain sufficient pay for the job and, at the same time, reduce the salary gap with most city residents. The proposal was rejected by the CiU, PSC, PP and Cs political party groups and failed (link to the Full City Council Meeting’s minutes). Since then, BComú councillors have been voluntarily applying the salary restrictions that feature in the party’s Code of Ethics.

As for salary, the difference between what she is assigned by the City Council and what she actually receives, she gives to social projects decided by the Barcelona en Comú plenary. This difference is approximately 25,600 euros per year.

As for subsistence allowance, she waives everything she is assigned as President of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) and returns it to the public coffers.

Gifts and protocol ceremonies 

The gifts that the Mayor receives in protocol ceremonies are inventoried and archived or deposited where they can be used. 

No municipal worker or councillor may accept gifts of over €50, besides courtesy ones.

The City Council bases its travel expenses criteria on the basis of savings and sustainability. As with all other municipal workers, the Mayor follows abides by these criteria. She always travels in tourist class and avoids using aeroplanes for journeys that are under 1,000 km and 7 hours’ travel, wherever possible.

The Mayor travels on foot, by public transports and by municipal vehicle during her day-to-day activities. The municipal vehicle is rented and chosen according to environmental criteria. It is not just a form of transport, it is an escort vehicle assigned to the Mayor for reasons of security and which travels wherever she goes.

The Mayor’s office has a traditional catering service for work meetings with a €14.5 cap on expenses per meal. The City Council only bears the expenses of outside meals in exceptional cases of institutional representation. 

The Mayor has a municipal credit card at her disposal, but she never uses it.
