These actions correspond to tactical urbanism. Paint and signs are used to quickly adapt public space to needs which arise, as is the case with the pandemic. When long-term work is considered necessary, a definitive transformation is the next step.
Tactical urbanism has saved thousands of jobs in recent months by extending restaurant and bar terraces, introducing traffic-calming measures in streets, reducing noise and pollution, protecting schools and gaining more public space for people. It forms part of a medium-term project and will be extended citywide to improve quality of life, reduce pollution and stimulate the neighbourhood economy, with the so-called Barcelona Superblock model.
