Declaration of the Climate Emergency in Barcelona

Climate

Speech of the day 16/01/2020

Barcelona is here today to declare a climate emergency and to say that we have made our choice. And we have chosen to take action.”

None of us will be here forever, but it is up to us how we go. History will remember us for what we have done or for what we have not done. However in the coming years, it will be decided if when it is time to go, because there is still time, whether we acted with determination in safeguarding the life of the planet and guaranteeing a better future for our children.

Barcelona is here today to declare the climate emergency and to say that we have made our choice. And we have chosen to take action.

Today Barcelona is declaring a climate emergency. Barcelona City Council is doing this, along with the organisations that have been participating in the roundtables and anyone else who wishes to join. Everyone is welcome. Everyone is needed.

And nothing is enough until we achieve the objective we have set ourselves, which is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 1990 emissions.

This is the objective and we will need to do everything we can in order to effectively achieve it.

We have the chance to gain a city with a better quality of life, more public spaces, more neighbourhood spaces and more green spaces. We have the chance to gain a city which rebels against fast consumption. A city that sees the importance in time and in shared time. Let’s get more time back as a group and for ourselves to live and for the people we love.

A city with a green economy generating quality and stable jobs.

Today, I am convinced that we are choosing the correct path. Let’s speed up our response to the climate emergency. Let’s make Barcelona the benchmark- a strong and responsible city.

This is not a pretence, this is a firm commitment to the defence of life in our city.

Thank you.
