The Barcelona we want

Cultural and Science Capital

Culture is part of our city’s personality. It is a priority sector for us so that’s why we allocate 6% of our budget to it, a percentage much higher than that of other administrations. We believe culture is part of our lives and a powerful tool for transformation.

Barcelona is a cultural benchmark around the world. We are the City of Literature, recognised by UNESCO, as well as Cultural and Science Capital. During the pandemic we demonstrated our support for culture and science by maintaining our cultural programmes while others were cancelling theirs and imagining new creative ways of giving support to cultural agents such as the Bonus Cultura or the City of Barcelona awards, transformed into grants

We have created a Science Plan and a Cultural Rights Plan, both pioneering plans in the world, the City and Science Biennial and the Hypatia Prize. We are continuing to innovate with big projects, such as Ciutadella of Knowledge, where 1,200 researchers will be based, or the boost to research on urban challenges.

And, above all, we are promoting programmes so culture and science reach all the neighbourhoods and those who need them most, with projects such as “In Residence”, the Neighbourhood Plan or the EscoLab programme to foster a scientific vocation among children, and especially girls.
